The best laid plans...

Just had my second dose of Docetaxel this morning - no dramas - they all happened yesterday!!

Jo came round to take my bloods - just a routine pre-treatment procedure...or so we all thought....but my red blood count was low so I'm a bit anaemic. I was ok for the chemo as my white cells and the infection fighting neutrophils are ok (not great but good enough) but Dr B thought I should have a blood transfusion. Unfortunately, that takes at least a day to sort with cross-matching the blood so that is now scheduled for tomorrow and it is a bit of a slow process. I'm very impressed by the communication between everybody - Dr B, Nicky the nurse and Pat, Dr B's secretary. They all knew that we were due to go on holiday today so were really trying to move things on - Nicky thought that because I haven't been symptomatic of an anaemic (breathlessness and unusual tiredness) I might get away without a transfusion but Dr B is concerned that I might deteriorate while I'm away and, apart from feeling knackered, we will be a long way from any health services so he doesn't want to take any chances. I wouldn't consider not going with what Dr B says - we trust him implicitly. I was so surprised because I have been feeing so well although the first thing Martin said to me yesterday morning was that I looked a bit yellow!

Although, we're gutted we totally understand that this is what happens, so no real complaints. We decided that Martin should still drive up to Edinburgh today with the girls (his and mine) - they've just left - and I will fly up tomorrow evening re-energised and revitalised!! I'm not sure that there was any room in the car for me anyway! We have tickets for Fringe shows tomorrow, all of which have had rave reviews, so it would be a shame for us all to miss them.

The Disability Living Allowance people rang in the morning and asked about my outdoor mobility to assess me for benefits - I didn't dare say that I went for a bike ride on Sunday and we are planning a 6-mile walk on holiday to visit where my Dad's ashes have been scattered. I'll be more considerate when my time comes!!!

The good news is I'm back on the steroids for a few days..so I've got a few extra hours in my day!! Oh joy!!

So, assuming all goes well tomorrow, I'll be off until 2nd Sept and will catch up when we're back.

Hi Vicky

So sorry your plans have been put on hold. Hope you are refuelled by the time you read this and ready to go on your flight to the fair city. We are just back - make sure you pack lots of warm stuff and wet weather gear!! I'll be thinking happy memories of your Dad so give him a hi from me when you are in the west. Love to Martin, Iona and all your family from me.

Lots of love

Hi Vicky
What a fantastic team you have with Dr B and Co!!! We trust in him implicitly too! All the TLC - and medication of course - is really keeping you boyant and we are all so grateful for that.
Now about this trip up north!! We had hoped that you might call past Fold End en route - but I don`t want any large metal flying objects dropping in on us unexpectedly - so if you decide to squeeze in the car for the return journey - you know you are always welcome. Remember its down hill coming home so you might make up some time and fancy a short pit stop. Now something to hopefully make you grin -- we are in a crazy golf tournament on Sunday and rather than go into detail - would love a really honest and truthful excuse not to have to play! Can you imagine the scene - 18 adults in fancy dress trying to get a pathetic little ball around a very unmanagable course!!! Do not even think about commenting!!! I am sure the named charity will appreciate our efforts!!!
Have a great break - I know you will really enjoy the shows.
Much love as ever to you all

Despite being married to a Bristol Clipper crew member for 5 years Mike will still not tell me why your boat was so fast . State secrets apparently.(We were hardly a threat coming last virtually in so many races on Glasgow !).
What is patently obvious from your blog is that your sheer grit and determination (and good sense of humour ) were an essential and integral part of that team and they were incredibly lucky to have you on board. No wonder spirits and confidence were so high with you all.
It seems that you have an amazingly responsive and supportive team around you and there is so much love and goodwill emanting from every corner.
We wish you well on your trip up north and hope you manage to blow a few of the cobwebs away in the fresh air!
With all our love

Have a wonderful holiday all of you.

Dr B really is a sweetie, insisting you missed the 7 hour car journey with two kids in the back. How much did you pay him for that one? Get to that airport and buy yourself a few magazines for a nice restful flight north. Don't worry about the carbon footprint either - Dr's orders, after all!

Hi Vicky,
Hope all went well and the new refreshed you is ready for a fab holiday.. look forward to reading all about it on your return... Does that mean you also get to jet back home again- car journeys with small children are well known for their ability to sap iron levels- amongst other things!
Lots of love

You're probably en-route as I type so I hope the blood transfusion went well and you bounced up the steps onto the plane. What a relaxing way to travel (childless rather than flying!).

Wish Iona a Happy Birthday from all of us next week, we'll be thinking of her on her special day.

Enjoy all that fresh air!!
